Judith Taylor was born and brought up in Perthshire. After studying English and Mediaeval History, she worked as a librarian, until a career change took her into iT. since 2003 she has lived and worked in Aberdeen. Her work has been widely published in magazines and anthologies, both in print and online, and from 2010 to 2013 she was Managing Editor of Pushing Out the Boat magazine.

The title of this collection recalls an Eng. Lit. lecturer, long ago, who interrupted their tutorial to exclaim, But of course you’ve never heard the nightingale, have you? You’re from Scotland! Yes, she is, and no, she hasn’t. but there are woods to walk, voices to hear, stories to remember, even in places where there are no nightingales; and some of them are in these poems.

‘Drawing the reader into landscapes ancient and modern, real and imagined, internal and external, this collection takes an often dark, but often slyly humorous, view of the world. The poems explore the secret places of memory and imagination, creating new mythologies from their exact observations of the every-day and their vivid evocations of times past.’
