‘2022 was Scotland’s Year of Stories, a year in which stories inspired by, created, or written in Scotland were showcased and celebrated. In January 2022, I purchased a short story anthology, People’s City (Birlinn, 2022), and having previously bought One City (Polygon, 2006), it highlighted to me that Edinburgh had at least two short story anthologies about it but that Glasgow, to my knowledge, had none.
Anyone who knows me well might realise that I can be obsessive about fairness so it made me feel that this imbalance needed to be addressed. I asked to meet with Colin Will and we had lunch at Dunbar where I told him about my idea which he liked. We arranged a schedule re a submission window to be accommodated around the submission windows for Postbox and developed a plan.
‘People make Glasgow’ is the famous strapline, created by Andrew Stevenson and David Whyte, co-founders of Tangent, almost a decade ago in 2014. It not only positioned Glasgow as a brilliant place to live, work and study, it also incorporated its essence. People really do make Glasgow and these five writers have created stories about Glasgow, I hope you enjoy them.’
