Gavin Bowd hails from the Scottish Borders. He is an author of poetry, fiction and journalism as well as a literary translator, notably of Michel Houellebecq. He has published widely on French, Romanian and Scottish culture and history. He was founding director of the StAnza Poetry Festival.

In short poems and longer suites, Rifle Song takes you across a range of places, people and epochs: the Siberian taiga, the sea off Lampedusa, Zhou Enlai in Auld Reekie, Charles Baudelaire in Cape Town... It is poetry of persecution and separation, of seismic shifts, political and environmental. It is also about resistance, redemption and the possibility of love.
