The popularity of haibun results to a large extent from the work of the great 17th century Japanese writer Basho, whose major work Oku no Hosomichi (The Narrow Road to the Interior) set the standard for the form for centuries to come. It is a unique combination of poetic prose with haiku. Haibun is often a narrative of a journey, real or allegorical, and in this collection Colin Will writes of his travels, experiences, ideas and philosophy through the medium of haibun.

 

This is an ambitious work which stretches the form to include subjects not normally covered by haibun writers. The range and variety of his writing is extensive, and the scale of this collection has rarely, if ever, been attempted before.
